During hot, humid months, dark, moist AC drain lines create the perfect environment for algae, bacteria, and fungal slime to thrive. When this sludge solidifies, it completely blocks condensate drainage.
DIY Emergency Drain Clearing
If your AC has shut down due to a triggered condensate float switch, follow this quick DIY emergency procedure:
- Turn off power to the HVAC system at the breaker panel.
- Locate the white PVC drain line near your indoor unit and remove the cap from the vertical T-pipe access port.
- Attach a wet/dry shop vacuum to the outdoor PVC discharge pipe outside your house and seal around the connection with a wet rag.
- Run the vacuum for 3 to 5 minutes to extract standing water and algae plugs.
- Pour 2 cups of warm water mixed with distilled white vinegar down the indoor access port to clear remaining debris.
